Goalball

Developed after WWII for blinded war vets, goalball is a team sport for athletes with vision impairment. The game has gone through many changes over the years; some of the basics are as follows:

Court size is similar to a volleyball court, and all of the lines on the court have thin string underneath for orientation purposes. Played with three players on each side, athletes must use eyeshades, allowing partially sighted players to compete on a level playing field with blind athletes. Balls used in play weigh 2.8 pounds, are about the size basketball, and makes noise, allowing athletes to locate them audibly on the field of play.

Goalball is a unique, fast-paced team sport with considerable strategy behind the game. The defense is much like a soccer goalie, extending your body to make a wall of protection between the ball and the goal. The throwing motion of the ball is an under-hand or side-arm throw, and the ball must make contact with the floor before the 6M line. It is a continuous back and forth game played in two 12-minute halves. It is a quick moving game that typically lasts about 40–45 minutes.
